My Story
As a music teacher who loved to work with wood, making and repairing violins was a natural next step for me. I used my summer vacations to study violin making and repair with Karl Roy at the University of New Hampshire Violin Craftsman Institute for around 16 summers. There I also learned to make and repair bows with Arnold Bone and Bill Salchow. My time at the bow making workshop at Oberlin as well as the many lectures and demonstrations at the Violin Society of America gatherings were also very valuable.
At first my plan was to become so skillful at repairing violins that I could work for a high end Violin Shop that worked on Strads, Guarneris, etc. However, there was a bigger need for excellent repairs of lesser instruments. My reputation for excellent work at reasonable prices grew my clientele to a point where I could stop teaching and work on violins full time. There was a need for students who study privately to play violins that were better than they could afford; so, I started to rent high quality violins. I made some bows and violins of various sizes for children who were sensitive enough and advanced enough to appreciate how much better they could play on a high quality instrument and bow. They were very well received; however, I needed an alternative for my clients. Rather than offer a variety of violins by different makers, my inclination is to work with one firm who provides consistently reliable high quality instruments. After looking inside of and listening to countless violins, it became obvious to me that Snow Violins are violins that can be trusted to be of high quality inside and out. So, now I am using my many years of experience to insure that my clients are happy playing Snow Violins.
